How a Strong Start in Operations Built an Even Stronger Loan Officer

April 11, 2025

alicia q&a

It’s been quite a journey for Alicia since she first stepped into the mortgage world back in 2012. Starting out as a processor and closer, she quickly proved herself with her organization, efficiency, and standout work ethic—so much so that leadership encouraged her to step into the spotlight as a loan officer. Today, as a valued mortgage loan originator, she’s known for her speed, accuracy, and clear communication—all qualities that make the home-buying process smoother for her clients. We recently caught up with Alicia to hear more about her career path from behind-the-scenes to front-line lending, what she loves most about her role now, and the rewarding experiences she’s had helping people achieve their dream of homeownership.

Q: Having started your career with us as a loan processor and closer, what does it mean to you to have had the opportunity to begin your mortgage journey in operations and then advance to a loan officer?
A: To have been given this opportunity means everything to me. Starting in the back corner of operations as a closer gave me a solid foundation in the mechanics of the mortgage business. Ex: How files move, what makes a loan clean, and where the pitfalls hide. It wasn’t glamorous, but it was where I learned how to fight for a loan and truly serve our clients. When leadership saw something in me and encouraged me to move into sales, I was both honored and terrified. But they supported me every step of the way. That transition wouldn’t have been possible without leaders who genuinely know their team and believe in giving us opportunities to grow.

Q: How would you describe the culture at Homestead, and what makes it different from other places you’ve worked?
A: The culture here is like family; you’re never seen as just a number. The owners are here for us, always present and reachable. We can pick up the phone at any time and talk to them. They listen, they care, and they make adjustments based on what we need in the field. It’s a place where our voices matter, and our ideas aren’t just heard, they’re implemented. That’s rare. They also invest in technology to keep us sharp and efficient.

Q: Can you share a memorable experience or success story that made you feel you truly belong here?
A: There was a family I helped during a really tough time in their lives. They were relocating, dealing with job transitions, and had been turned down elsewhere. I was able to dig deep, thanks to my ops background, and find a path forward for them. When we closed, the buyer cried and hugged me at the closing table. That moment reminded me why I do this. And it meant so much to know I had the full backing of Homestead, from the tech tools to the underwriters, to help make it happen. It wasn’t just my win; it was a team win.

Q: Our mission statement is “Making lives better, one home at a time.” How has working at Homestead helped make your life better?
A: Homestead has made my life better by allowing me to grow both personally and professionally. They didn’t just give me a job; they gave me a career, a purpose, and people who cheer me on. I’ve been able to build a life for my family doing work I love, surrounded by a team that genuinely roots for one another. You don’t find that everywhere. I’ve never felt “stuck” here and have always felt supported, challenged, and appreciated.

Q: If you could give advice to someone considering joining Homestead, what would it be?
A: Do it—Jump in with both feet! If you want to grow, be heard, and be part of a company that actually cares about people, from leadership to co-workers to the families we serve—this is the place. Homestead will give you the tools, the tech, and the support you need. All you have to do is show up ready to work and be part of something bigger than yourself.
