When he’s not shaping careers, you’ll find him perfecting his golf swing or sparking up the smoker with his BBQ crew, The Burnt Crow, where friendly competition and good company reign supreme. In this Q&A, we’ll explore Jeff’s journey from restaurant owner to mortgage mentor and discover what makes Homestead the place he’s proudly called home since 2003.
Q: You’ve had a long career here at Homestead. Thinking back to when you started, how has your experience compared to your expectations?
A: When I joined Homestead, I wasn’t entirely sure what to expect. Transitioning from being a food service franchisee into mortgage lending was a significant change. I was excited but also uncertain. Fortunately, many of the skills I developed—like working with customers and managing fast-paced environments—translated well, even though the mortgage industry brought its own unique challenges.
Over time, I learned the complexities of mortgage processes and financial regulations. The team at Homestead was incredibly supportive, providing guidance and encouragement that helped me through the transition. While there were plenty of challenges, the rewards and personal growth far outweighed them. Looking back, this wasn’t just a change in job—it was a major step forward in my career development.
Q: What’s been the most valuable lesson you’ve learned in your 20+ years with Homestead?
A: Embracing change and staying flexible have been crucial. The mortgage industry is constantly evolving, and that adaptability has helped me grow both professionally and personally. It’s made me more resilient and open to new opportunities.
Equally important is being honest and transparent with customers. Building trust through integrity has been key to maintaining long-term relationships. When customers feel valued and respected, it builds loyalty that lasts.
Q: How would you describe the culture at Homestead, and what makes it different from other places you’ve worked?
A: Homestead’s culture is genuinely unique and deeply supportive. Working closely with the three owners every day creates a collaborative, team-oriented atmosphere. Their open-door policy encourages open dialogue, and they truly listen to feedback. It feels like a family here—people look out for one another, and that mutual support makes it a special place to work.
Q: Can you share a memorable experience or success story that made you feel you truly belong here?
A: When I was brand new and still learning the ropes, Managing Partner Greg Aftayev invited me to play Golden Tee after work. We had a blast, and he asked if I played real golf. I said I did a little, so we scheduled a tee time for the following week. He spent the entire week teasing me about how he was going to beat me.
When we finally played, I ended up beating him by about 15 strokes. After a few more rounds, I joked with him: “You teach me how to sell, and I’ll teach you how to play golf.” That moment sparked not only a great friendship, but also an ongoing mentorship. It showed me how personal connections outside of work can lead to meaningful growth within it—and that I was truly part of the team.
Q: If you could give advice to someone considering joining Homestead, what would it be?
A: If you’re considering joining Homestead, embrace the family-like culture where you’ll work closely with ownership and a team that values collaboration, feedback, and support. Be adaptable and open to change, as the company encourages continuous learning and flexibility—being open to new challenges is essential to thriving here. Take the time to build strong relationships with your colleagues, as these connections can enhance your experience and contribute to a positive work environment. And finally, be willing to share your ideas—Homestead values open communication and genuinely appreciates the input and suggestions of every team member.
