Why JR has Stayed 20+ Years at Homestead

August 15, 2025

jr q&a

Over the course of more than two decades at Homestead Financial Mortgage, JR Obrecht has seen expectations not just met but exceeded. What began as a promising career evolved into running a successful branch in Edwardsville, Illinois, producing at a high level and thriving in an environment built on encouragement and trust. In this Q&A, he reflects on the lessons that have shaped his career, the culture that celebrates each person’s unique strengths, and the stability that allows him to deliver exceptional service to every client.

Q: You’ve had a long career here at Homestead. Thinking back to when you started, how has your experience compared to your expectations?
A: My expectations have been far exceeded. When I first started, I never imagined I’d have my own branch office or be producing at the level I am today. The amount of support and encouragement I’ve received along the way has made my time here truly special. Homestead has created an environment where people are genuinely invested in your success, and that’s made all the difference.

Q: What’s been the most valuable lesson you’ve learned in your 20+ years with Homestead?
A: One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned is not to worry about things I can’t change. This job, like life, will always throw unexpected challenges at you. Over time, I’ve learned to take those things in stride. I process what’s happening, I pray about it, and then I let it go. It’s a mindset that’s helped me stay focused, positive, and productive even during the tougher times.

Q: How would you describe the culture at Homestead, and what makes it different from other places you’ve worked?
A: The culture at Homestead is very intentional and people-focused. Management understands that we all have special strengths, and not all our “superpowers” are the same. It’s not a one-size-fits-all approach. They help you play to your strengths and grow from there. That kind of support builds confidence and loyalty, and it makes this a place where people want to stay and succeed.

Q: Our mission statement is “Making lives better, one home at a time.” How has working at Homestead helped make your life better?
A: Working at Homestead has brought a level of structure and stability that’s hard to find elsewhere. Knowing I can count on my company allows me to focus on what I do best—serving clients and growing my business. I’ve developed strong relationships with the underwriters, closers, and my processing team, which makes the entire loan process smoother for everyone involved. We’re all aligned, and that gives me the confidence to offer fast closings, quick pre-approvals, and a great overall experience to my clients. That reliability has made my job more rewarding and my life a lot less stressful.

Q: If you could give advice to someone considering joining Homestead, what would it be?
A: I’d say make the move! If Homestead is the right fit for you, you’ll know pretty quickly. And if it’s not, you’ll still learn something valuable about what you’re looking for. But more often than not, people who are growth-minded, driven, and open to learning thrive here. This is a place that encourages you to challenge yourself and constantly improve. If that resonates with you, then Homestead is definitely worth exploring.

JR’s story is proof that when you work in a place where leadership invests in your strengths, supports your growth, and values your well-being, long-term success naturally follows. At Homestead, JR found the stability, trust, and resources to serve clients with speed and confidence while building lasting relationships with his team. For those seeking a career where you can challenge yourself, grow your skills, and truly feel like part of a family, his advice is simple: make the move and see what’s possible.

"By being open and recognizing our strengths and weaknesses, we can see opportunities for growth and ways to help each other."
